Just seen a news story about this very thing! A representative from one of the Vegan/Vegetarian societies (I forget which..) and a Farmers Union representative had the opportunity to put their points across on channel 4 news.

The nervous vegan tried to turn it into a campaign against meat and say as much as he possibly could in one long drawn out breath in order to get as much of his point across as possible in the short time he had in which to do so.

Naturally he was going to say 'Stop eating meat to save the planet' but that is just not realistic. Millions of people depend on livestock farming. (But could they all start growing posh broccoli florets and make more per KG than the meat they sell?? - There's a thought! Grow trendy veg!)

The FU representative made some very good points and confirmed they and the Environment Agency are working on ways to tackle the problem and reverse the environmental impact of livestock farming.

There's no reason why livestock farming can't be used to combat climate change. There's talk of generating bio-gas as a side product, altering the animals diets so they fart less and surely if they eat good nutrient rich foods their manure can be used to make good compost?

It is mad to think that 30% of the earth is used for livestock farming though...

..and it's not right that 70% of the rain forest has vanished...

('gifts' were sent to some of the tribes contaminated with western diseases which wiped them out, on purpose..... just so the land could be taken... Has anyone ever been held accountable for that?)
